The Zeolite Group of crystals belong to the Tectosilicate Subclass of minerals. The Zeolites combine rarity, beauty, complexity and unique crystal habits. They typically form in the cavities (or vesicles) of volcanic rocks. Zeolites are the result of very low grade metamorphism. They currently are undergoing extensive research into their formation and unique properties.
The zeolite group is very diverse in their crystal habit. There are about 45 natural minerals that are recognized members of the Zeolite Group, I have listed only some here on this page.
Zeolite occurs with other crystals generally in a matrix form. They include Apophyllite, Okenite, Pectolite, Prehnite and Stilbite.
Collecting zeolites can be very enjoyable and fulfilling. Most Zeolites are sold as specimens rather than cut or tumbled crystals because the beauty of the original crystal stone is lostwith processing.
Zeolites are typically soft to moderately hard, light in density, transparent to translucent and have similar origins. Zeolites occur in a variety of colours.
