Overview
Hiddenite is a yellow-green or emerald green variety of spodumene. Hiddenite derives its name form W. E. Hidden, who discovered the stone in 1879 in North Carolina, USA. The most important deposits of hiddenite can be found in Brazil, Madagascar, Myanmar and the USA.
Spodumene is a lithium aluminium silicate that belongs to the pyroxene group of minerals. Spodumene is a transparent to translucent stone with a vitreous lustre which occurs in the colours clear, grey; pink, lilac and violet (kunzite); and yellow, green (hiddenite). They occur as prismatic, generally flattened and elongated crystals. Some crystals of spodumene have been found in record large crystals of more than 12 meters long. Spodumene is a rock forming mineral in granites and pegmatites that bear other lithium minerals. Spodumene is a relatively new mineral to science, being discovered in the last three centuries and gem varieties have only been discovered in the last 120 years.
