The Corundum group occurs in semi opaque masses and also in distinct prismatic or tapered crystals with close transverse striations.
Corundum is composed of aluminium oxide and is transparent to opaque.
Members of the corundum group include Ruby (red), Padparadscha (orange) and Sapphire (blue, pink, yellow, green, violet and colourless).
Some rubies and sapphires exhibit the phenomena of asterism "the appearance of a six rayed star within the stone", an effect caused by very fine included needles of rutile that shimmer, across the stone when held in the light. Most star rubies and sapphires are cut as cabochon as the effect is lost in a faceted stone
Padparadscha Sapphire is a salmon-pink variety of Corundum, originally being mined in Sri Lanka, but also found in Vietnam and some parts of Africa.
The name is derived from the Sanskrit/Sinhalese "padma raga", the word for the colour of local lotus flower.
Padparadscha Sapphire is associated with the solar plexus chakra. It helps you see the truth and hence helps in not deceiving yourself. This stone helps you see every situation in its purest form. Padparadscha sapphire will give you true knowledge.
Padparadscha sapphire activates the hara chakras and the entire hara line. It stimulates the will to live and the will to achieve your life purpose. This stone stimulates your desire for soul growth and for experiences that lead to soul growth. Padparadscha sapphire aids in manifesting conditions that facilitate and guide your life purpose. It brings you joy, success and promotes curiosity, sexuality and creativity.
It is believed that this gemstone can bring the wearer a great inner peace. The wearer becomes more aware of their surroundings including the cosmic universe because of the inner peace. The gemstone helps view every situation in the purest of its forms. It also bears all the general properties of sapphires like it protects against depression and colic problems. It even heals rheumatism. Orange Padparadscha sapphire's are known to help couples conceive children especially if the gemstone is worn in a ring by either of the two potential parents.
Ruby is a pink to blood-red coloured gem variety of the mineral Corundum. The name comes from the Latin word "ruber" - red.
The red colour can vary within each individual deposit, therefore the determination of the source from the colour is not possible. The red colour is caused by chromium, and in case of brownish tones due to presence of iron.
The rough stone has dull and greasy lustre.
Inclusions are common and often indicate that the stone is natural.
At first only the blue variety was called Sapphire. Today corundum's of gemstone quality of all colours except red and orange are called Sapphire. The most desired colour is a pure cornflower-blue. Some blue and greyish-blue Sapphires (Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tanzania, Colombia, and others) exhibit a reddish or violet-red tint under artificial light - the alexandrite effect which is caused by admixtures of chromium and vanadium, the intensity is related to the concentration of these elements.
Inclusions of rutile needles cause a silky shine; aligned needles cause a six-rayed star sapphire.
